Spillemyndigheden, the Danish gambling regulator, released new data, highlighting a significant increase in the spending on gambling activities for this February. Data disclosed Tuesday revealed that the total gambling spend on online casino, gaming machines, land-based casinos and betting, skyrocketed to DKK 587 million ($83.8 million). The aforementioned result, compared year-over-year to the February 2023 data, revealed an increase of 18.3%.
A breakdown of the DKK 587 million ($83.8 million) in total gambling spend reported this February showed a year-over-year increase in all sub-categories. The smallest increase was observed in the spending on gaming machines, which posted DKK 100 million ($14.3 million) in gross gaming revenue (GGR), a figure that marked a 1.85% year-over-year increase.
Land-based casinos reported DKK 32 million ($4.6 million) in GGR. Compared to the DKK 30 million ($4.3 million) figure from February 2023, the latest result showed an increase year-over-year of 7.01%.
A solid increase was observed in the spending on online casinos by Danish customers. While in February last year, iGaming operators posted DKK 234 million ($33.4 million) in GGR, this year, their revenues skyrocketed to a whopping DKK 278 million ($39.7 million). The latest figure showed an increase of 18.53% year-over-year.
While iGaming recorded a solid increase in GGR, the biggest uptick in revenue was observed for betting activities. Overall, GGR in February from betting activities soared to DKK 178 million ($25.4 million), a result that marked a staggering 32.55% increase when compared to the figure from the corresponding period last year. According to Spillemyndigheden: βThe growth in betting may be explained by a lower RTP in February 2024 compared to February 2023.β

Registrations with ROFUS Increase
Per the latest report from Spillemyndigheden, the number of people who were excluded from gambling activities by registering with ROFUS in February was 48,685. This result marked an increase when compared to the 46,152 registrations recorded for the same period in 2023. A breakdown of the 48,685 registrations reveals that men represented the majority of the registrations, some 37,603, while 11,082 women also registered with ROFUS in February.
In other news for the region, recently, the gambling regulator reprimanded Mr Green due to breaches related to internal controls, including lack of documentation and risk assessment. According to the gambling watchdog, the 888-owned operator failed to flag a suspected suspicious transaction with the Money Laundering Secretariat.
